What is Hair Transplant ?
Hair transplant is a surgical procedure to add more hair to your scalp, eyebrow or beard which is thinning or balding. It is performed by removing hair follicles from donor area (back of scalp, beard or body) and planting them to the required area. For hair transplant different techniques are available in the market. Most common method used today in Hair transplant are FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular unit Extraction).
FUT is also known as Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS). In FUT procedure the surgeon removes a piece/strip of your scalp using the scalpel. The strip will be usually 4 to 10 inches long depending on the number of grafts required and can extend from one ear to other. This area where the strip is taken is closed by stitches. The strip is then further slivered and separated into grafts or units with the help of dissecting blades under a microscope. Once the entire strip is slivered and cut, the surgeon makes incisions on the scalp or the recipient area using needles or blades to which the grafts are inserted.
FUE also called Follicular Unit Extraction which is latest methodology of harvesting the follicular unit grafts. In FUE methodology, the individual follicular units are extracted one at a time from the donor area. This is performed using micro- punches of 0.85mm diameter, either manually or by a motorized device. The punch incises the skin surface around every hair follicle before they’re carefully teased out manually with forceps.
Difference between FUE & FUT
|Individual FU’s extracted||A strip of donor hair is removed|
|Negligible scar||Linear scar in donor area|
|Quick healing||About a month for complete healing|
|Minimal discomfort after procedure||More discomfort|
|No damage or wastage||Depends on the performing team|
Almost two-thirds of guys will experience some hair thinning by the age of 35. For some of them it happens even in early 20’s. Today there are several options available to regain or to control hair loss. The permanent method of regrowing hair in a balding area is hair transplant. Hair Transplants have become more and more popular. To perform HT, two techniques are available in the market. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). The most common and effective technique followed today is FUE with the advantages over FUT like, minimal scarring, very less down time and natural result.
FUE Method (Follicular Unit Extraction)
For Hair restoration in men, FUE which is latest methodology of harvesting the follicular unit grafts. In FUE method, the individual follicular units are extracted one at a time from the donor area. This is performed using micro-punches of 0.80mm diameter, either manually or by a motorized device. The punch incises the skin surface around every hair follicle before they’re carefully teased out manually with forceps. Throughout extraction, removal of adjacent follicular units is avoided to prevent the cause the appearance of a line scar. A random or zigzag pattern is used, keeping 4-5 adjacent follicular units intact.
At HTCA each Hair follicles are implanted one by one with the help of special implanter tool in the required angle, direction and depth thus providing 100% natural result. Throughout procedure the temperature of hair follicle is maintained and stored in a special holding solution. In FUE Handling of follicles is very minimal which help us with maximum success rate.
